A bad shower has a way of ruining the start of every day — lukewarm dribbles, a temperature that lurches when someone runs a tap, or that nagging damp patch creeping out from the enclosure. The frustrating part? Most people are sold the wrong fix because nobody explained the basics first.

This guide does that. We’ll show you why your water system decides which shower you can even have, walk through the common faults and what causes them, give honest Birmingham pricing, and flag the local quirks that matter. This is the bit most guides skip, and it’s the most important. Before you fall in love with a fancy shower, you need to know what your home can supply.

Combi boiler, system boiler, or gravity-fed?

• Combi boiler: heats water on demand, no tank. Great for mixer and thermostatic showers; usually can’t take a pump.
• System/unvented cylinder: stored hot water at mains pressure, flexible, suits most shower types.
• Gravity-fed (cold tank in the loft, hot cylinder in a cupboard): common in older Birmingham homes; often low pressure, which is where a power shower or pump comes in.

A power shower needs a pump and the right tank setup — fit one to a combi and it simply won’t work. An electric shower, by contrast, heats cold mains water itself, so it’s ideal where hot-water supply is limited. A good plumber checks your pressure, boiler and layout first, then recommends — rather than selling you the priciest unit and hoping.

Shower types explained (and who each suits)

No hot water or fluctuating temperature

Usually a worn thermostatic cartridge, or cold-water pressure dropping when another tap or the toilet runs. Often a straightforward cartridge swap stabilises it.

Week pressure

Could be a blocked, limescaled shower head (the easy one), a failing pump, or simply a low-pressure system that needs a pump or different shower altogether.

Leaks boiler 

Most shower leaks come from failed tray or door seals, or a loose waste connection — none of which need retiling. If water’s tracking through the tiles or grout, that’s a bigger job, and worth checking against our wider plumbing repairs service.

A bit of genuinely local context. Birmingham’s tap water travels around 73 miles from the Elan Valley reservoirs in mid-Wales, making it notably soft, far softer than the hard-water South East. For showers that’s mostly good news: less limescale clogging heads and seizing cartridges, so parts last longer than they would in London.

The bigger local factor is the housing. Birmingham’s Victorian and Edwardian terraces, Moseley, Kings Heath, Harborne, Balsall Heath, often run on older gravity-fed systems with modest pressure. That’s why a “weak shower” in a period home is frequently a system issue, not a faulty unit, and why a pump or the right shower type fixes it where a like-for-like swap wouldn’t. If you’re rethinking the whole space, it’s often best folded into a full bathroom renovation rather than done piecemeal.

For electric showers, yes  they need a dedicated, correctly sized circuit connected by a Part P registered electrician. If the existing wiring is already in place and correctly rated, a plumber can connect the new unit; if new wiring’s needed, a qualified electrician handles that part. • Descale the head occasionally — even with Birmingham’s soft water, a quick soak keeps the spray strong.
• Run it warm before cold-only blasts — sudden temperature swings wear thermostatic cartridges faster.
• Clear the hair trap monthly — the top cause of slow-draining showers.
• Re-silicone before it fails — cracked or peeling sealant is your early warning of a future leak.
• Don’t ignore a wobble or a drip — small enclosure movements break seals and let water behind the tray.
